Another Scam Targeting Minnesotans: What You Need to Know
This is a fake! The State of Minnesota simply doesn’t do this.
Scammers are at it again—this time targeting Minnesotans with threatening text messages and phone calls pretending to be from law enforcement or government agencies. These messages claim you owe money, have missed a court appearance, or must immediately pay bail to avoid arrest. Let’s be clear: The State of Minnesota does not text people demanding money. The State does not call you to demand bail over the phone.
Unfortunately, these scams can be convincing. They often use fear and urgency to pressure people into making quick decisions. The scammers may use spoofed phone numbers, official-sounding language, and even claim to be from the court system or a sheriff’s office. But no legitimate Minnesota government agency will ever demand payment through a text message, over the phone, or via gift cards, wire transfers, or mobile payment apps.
If you receive one of these suspicious messages or calls:
Do not respond.
Do not send money.
Do not click on any links.
Instead, report it to the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office immediately. They track scams and work to hold these fraudsters accountable.
These scams are not just a nuisance—they can lead to real financial harm. And they exploit people at a time when they may already be vulnerable or frightened.
If you are facing actual criminal charges or have questions about a legitimate case, do not rely on random calls or texts to guide you. Instead, reach out to an experienced criminal defense attorney who can give you real answers and advocate for you.
