St. Paul Criminal Defense Attorney on Michigan School Shooting and “Sins of the Father, Sins of the Son” - Watch Video

In another school shooting, this time in Oxford, Michigan, a 15 year old student walked into his own school and allegedly killed four fellow students while injuring seven more. What makes this case slightly different is the prosecutor charged the parents of this 15 year old with involuntary manslaughter.

An experienced criminal defense attorney will likely argue “the sins of the father are not the sins of the son nor are the sins of the son, those of the father.” In other words, we are all responsible for what we do, not what they do.

Under Michigan law, involuntary manslaughter can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death. The allegations include the parents buying a 9mm Sig Sauer for their son, not storing it properly and not checking whether he had it in his possession.

While this may be the law in Michigan,, the question is whether the parents’ behavior rose to the level where they should be charged. An experienced criminal defense attorney will likely argue “the sins of the father are not the sins of the son nor are the sins of the son, those of the father.” In other words, we are all responsible for what we do, not what they do.

Jack Rice appeared on ABC TV in St. Paul, MN to discuss the Michigan case and how a good Defense Attorney could represent the parents in this case.
