If Convicted of a Sex Crime, How Long Do I have to Register as a Sex Offender?

Sex crimes in Minnesota can frequently come with particularly brutal sentences. These in themselves can be challenging. However, there is an additional requirement that comes along with a conviction and that is sexual offender registration. Minnesota law requires that if somebody is convicted of a sex crime, they will also almost certainly have to register as a sex offender.

Generally, the minimum length of time of registration is at least 10 years for many charges. However, in the event of violations of the registration laws, that amount of time might be extended let alone the additional charges of failure to register that they may face. At the same time, if somebody is convicted of sexual assault against children under 13, they will be required to register as a sexual offender for the rest of their lives. This is also true for certain kinds of rape charges.

If you are charged with sex crimes in Minnesota, it is critical that contact a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist to determine not just the prison time that you may face but the sex offender registration possibilities. The requirements of registration can be onerous and extreme and it is critical to know what you face or you could walk into court blind which is the last thing you would ever want to do.
